A ZIP file is a single, compressed package that can hold multiple files or folders. You’ll need to extract (unzip) it before you can use the contents.
Windows
Extract with built-in tools
- Locate the ZIP file in File Explorer.
- Right-click the ZIP file and choose “Extract All…”.
- Pick a destination folder for the files.
- Click Extract. The files will appear in the chosen folder.
Peek without extracting everything
- Double-click the ZIP to browse it like a folder.
- Drag files or folders out to copy them to another location.
Re-zip files (optional)
- Select files or folders.
- Right-click and choose Send to → Compressed (zipped) folder.
- Rename the new ZIP file if needed.
Troubleshooting
- Can’t extract? Move the ZIP to Documents or Desktop and try again.
- “Blocked” download? Right-click the ZIP → Properties → Unblock → Apply.
- File “in use”? Close any app using the file, then retry.
iPhone & iPad (iOS/iPadOS)
Unzip with Files app
- Open the Files app and find the ZIP file.
- Tap the ZIP once. Files creates a new folder with the same name.
- Open that folder to access your files.
Zip files (optional)
- In Files, select one or more items.
- Tap More (…) → Compress to create a ZIP in the same location.
Tips
- To move ZIPs or extracted folders, use Select → Move in Files.
- If you see “Preview” instead of unzipping, tap Share → Save to Files first, then unzip.
Common Questions
- Where should I extract?
- Use a folder you control (e.g., Documents, Desktop, iCloud Drive). Avoid system folders.
- Why is the ZIP smaller than the extracted files?
- Compression makes files smaller. Once extracted, they return to normal size.
- Can I edit files inside a ZIP?
- Treat ZIP files as read-only. Extract first, then edit, then re-zip if needed.
