Solving the Mystery

Reputations are at stake and no one at the party wants to risk the scandal of press and police involvement. Now the guests must work together to sift through the evidence and identify the killer in their midst!

Our murder mystery party was a great success!! The night was so much fun and it was great to see everyone dressed up and in character! It was also such a great way for everyone to interact and meet new people. And the murderer was so unexpected which made it all the more fun! The party guidebook, invites and character sheets were all really helpful and self-explanatory which made it very easy to host the night. I will definitely being throwing one of these parties again!

Headline Great customer service and high quality game

    Nickname Lee-Ann

I have a small amount of things to say, which I’ll outline below.

    1. The service you provide is impeccable. Firstly, the quality of your mysteries, at the given price, catering to so many players was great. Living in South Africa with the exchange rate, my budget didn’t allow me to spend $50+ which was the cost of some parties catering to the number of guests I needed.

    2. Aside for the price and high quality of the mystery, I was exceptionally pleased by the help of Ken in particular. Whenever I had questions (including indecisiveness over which mystery to go with) he was there to advise.

    3. Regarding the game itself the only thing I really have to say is regarding a couple of the characters.

3.1 The maid character (I don’t have the mystery on hand so can’t recall her name) didn’t really have much to do. While it was alright to give to a quieter personality, my friend who played this character really didn’t have much to do.

3.2 In the guidebook where you put asterix’ for the NB characters you can’t leave out, I felt it could be helpful to also highlight the potential suspects. I didn’t realise the person I’d cast in that role would be so involved, and they didn’t really handle it very well. By knowing which characters are suspect (as we know who the murderer is anyway as the host) it could be great to be able to pick suspects who we know will be able to play against the suspected murderer.

3.3 Regarding the waitoring staff, I know they are just extra characters to allow more players into the game but I didn’t feel they had much to do (aside for serving food, which as the host I wasn’t happy with my guests doing). Again while these roles are good for more quiet personalities, the role could also be considered dull which can result in bored guests. It could be great to even give the waitoring staff particular gossip and goals beyond just serving food and knowing who each character is.

Our Murder Mystery party ran so well and so smoothly. All of our guests had such a great time, as it was really something unique they had always wanted to do but never had the opportunity. I did write a blog post on our experience, and would happy to write more. Please see the link here: http://leelipman.wordpress.com/2013/09/04/how-to-host-a-murder-mystery-party/

I hope you have a fantastic week. Would love to see new mysteries being written, especially with a larger cast (can’t help it we have so many friends who love this type of thing).

Thank you again for all your help and this fantastic service.

Thank you so much for creating such a wonderful party! I had the murder mystery this past weekend and we had 23 characters! Everyone had a blast and can’t wait for the next one!

I loved how easy it was to set up and to run through-out the night. Everyone got into character and it couldn’t have gone any smoother.

Thanks again for providing a fun and entertaining night of Murder Mystery!

Our Murder in Manhattan party was great! All of the guests came dressed up and stayed in character as they discussed the different clues and motives of the people around them. We had a big spaghetti dinner to supplement the event–it really made it feel like a banquet for Fisk Enterprises.

Follow these steps to host this mystery:

  1. Each guest will each assume the role of a particular character
Mystery Parties involve a combination of improvisational acting, storytelling, and creative problem solving. Each guest will play the part of that character throughout the course of the game. Each character has specific personality traits, goals, secrets, and information, all of which are included in the character sheet; a big part of the fun is getting into character and taking on a new, exciting role.
  2. A mysterious Event will occur
At some point during the party, an Event will occur that will force the players to come together in order to solve a problem or unravel a mystery. Traditionally, the Event in question will be the murder of one of the characters (as played by a guest), but the parties crafted by Playing With Murder often use this basic framework to accommodate different types of Events, thereby ensuring that your guests will be surprised and entertained (even if they are veteran murder mystery party players).
  3. Solve the mystery!
Your guests will need to use the information that their characters know (as well as additional clues that are provided during the game) to solve the mystery or overcome the problem posed by the Event. Typically this culminates in the guests voting on the identity of the murderer, but again, different parties will have different specific goals. All of our parties also come complete with additional subgames (treasure hunts, unique character goals and special puzzles) that are guaranteed to keep the action intense and your guests motivated and focused.

Expanded Game For Large Groups

If you have extra players, there are two ways that you can accommodate everyone:

  • Investigator Role – Additional players have the option of playing the role of “Investigators”. In this role the players are not suspects and do not have character backgrounds but can question the suspects and try to solve the mystery along with the other players. Expanded Games include a PDF guide that explains how to use the Investigator role, as well as printable character sheets and name tags for anyone that is playing an Investigator.
  • Multiple Groups – It is also possible to break your guests up into groups and play multiple instances of the game at the same time. The game will more or less happen the same way; the host makes announcements and each group moves their game forward simultaneously based on the host’s instructions. It’s good to have one assistant in each group to answer questions and facilitate gameplay within the group. This method provides a more intimate experience for your guests, who get better acquainted with a smaller group and participate in a more digestible story. Please contact us if you’d like more information about how to run your party using the Multiple Groups method.

Both the standard and expanded games are included with the purchase of any game kit.
